More than 800 guests and many VIPs of the financial community at the opening of Deutsche Börse in Eschborn.

Brexit, European Elections, ECB Presidency: Europe is on the verge of key decisions that will shape the future of all of us for a long time to come. These topics were the focus of the speeches during the annual opening on 7 February in The Cube in Eschborn. The event is one of the most important meeting points of the financial community and an excellent opportunity for an intensive exchange of ideas. The discussions and get-together lasted until late night.

We as hosts, but also the financial centre and its community, received a lot of support from Federal Minister of Finance, Olaf Scholz, the guest of honour of the evening. Campaigning for Frankfurt during his international discussions was not even necessary, the Minister said.

He also spoke in detail about the Eurex Clearing Partnership Program, which now, a few weeks before the planned withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the EU, was of outstanding importance. He was pleased that Deutsche Börse’s programme was so well received in the market, he said.

In his welcoming address, the Chairman of the Supervisory Board, Joachim Faber, emphasised the need to strengthen a capital-based pension system.

According to Faber, this is also part of a political and economic understanding that focuses on sustainability. Deutsche Börse Group wanted to do its utmost to contribute to this.

Theodor Weimer confirmed Deutsche Börse’s spirit of optimism, which had a brilliant 2018 financial year behind it. He named new ideas, especially with regard to digitisation. According to Weimer, tokens will make almost any number of goods easy and efficient to trade in the near future.

From works of art to personal careers: everything can be represented by tokens. However, the CEO warned that trading activities should take place in the regulated market of a stock exchange. Deutsche Börse as an “efficiency engine” created transparent and safe markets.
